Cultivating Poise

Cultivating Poise

No one is born with poise. With that being said, we can ALL cultivate an air of poise in our daily lives.

Cultivating Poise

All my life I have been drawn to the elegance and beauty that etiquette and sophistication bring to a woman’s life.

Pre-“mom” years I devoured biographies, movies, books, and lessons on anything I could get my hands on.

I refined and perfected myself as best I could. Don’t get me wrong I have so much more work to do, but I love it and want to keep refining. I researched and took notes, I drank it all in, and then practiced and practiced what I had learned!

Fast-forward to “mom” years. The beginning of having my babies was the most culture shocking. I was exhausted from a colicky baby, up all night for 7 to 8 months.

The the babies started coming faster and faster. I had 2 in 18 months and 3 in babies in 27 months. Yes that is 3 little kids under the age of 2. And it didn’t stop there.

Needless to say, I felt like I had lost my figure, beauty, sanity, and most of all my poise.

Until One Day I Decided I Didn’t Want To Lose Myself, I Didn’t Want To Get Lost In Transition. I Wanted Motherhood To Make Me The Best Version I Could Be.

So I got my notebooks back out, I started researching again. But this time I refined it all for the stage in life I’m at now. Motherhood.

I realized that life is not happy if we are miserably waiting for it to change all the time.

We must decide to cultivate an elegance, a poise within ourselves.

It all has to begin within.

FIRST: Cultivate Poise By Finding Peace Within

Everything must begin inside us.

We will never be happy without choosing happiness inside first. We will never be healthy without fixing the problems inside first. Everything must first start on the inside. This is very very true when it comes to cultivating elegance and poise in our lives.

Poise comes from a place of peace. You can have fantastic table manners but lose your temper at a family member. You can have amazing fashion sense and always look amazing but have a loud over bearing voice that disrupts people.

Cultivating poise brings our souls and bodies into aliment with each other, creating a perfect recipe for elegance inside and outside.

SECOND: Cultivate Poise

Google says poise is: ” a graceful and elegant bearing in a person.”

Poise is of course outer beauty as well. Things like posture, facial beauty, a good sense of fashion. However it is alignment with inner beauty. Inner control and self awareness.

Because of this poise needs to be practiced.

It can be very hard to maintain poise and standards for living elegantly. It can be easy when you don’t feel well, or when things aren’t going well to throw in the towel for a time. To let your posture go, to complain, or even lose your temper can be tempting. But when looking back on your life, it is through the hard times that you grew the most. It is when you were most tempted to lose your cool but chose so consciously not to that you gained the most progress. It is in these moments that you are hard wiring your brain to lose bad habits of sloppiness, complaining, feeling sorry for ones self, lack of posture, or even losing your temper on family, friends, or strangers and reprogramming it to be a woman of poise and elegance.

THIRD: Self-Expression

Self expression is how EVERY single person shows the world who they are.

Some people are colorful, vibrant artists, some are analytical and practical. The adjectives to describe people are endless, just like self-expression. When it comes to poise and elegance self-expression have simple guidelines.

  1. Manners and Etiquette
  2. Expression
  3. Dress and Fashion
  4. Poise
  5. Walking and Posture
  6. Sitting and Posture
  7. Social Conduct and Voice

By practicing these 7 beautiful forms of self-expression and perfecting each category you will effortlessly cultivate a sense of poise.

I just want to encourage you now. Motherhood is not for the faint of heart. It is by far the hardest thing I have ever embarked on.

I have gone through several stages and chapters in my life, but I have learned that by not taking care of me, and by letting myself go in anyway only does a disservice to the ones I have dedicated my life to. You are the lighthouse in this dark world for your children and husband. Sons and daughters alike look to you for what a beautiful and true woman is. Be UN-apologetically you, practice poise and you will be the Queen of your home and world, making our society that more elegant and lovely!
